The foremost purpose of a body wash is to cleanse and remove impurities from the skin surface and while this may seem straightforward there is a delicate balance between cleansing and stripping. Not only should cleansing be superficial, not touching deeper layers of the stratum corneum, but it should be the means of resetting your skin and bringing skin back to a more natural healthy state. Surfactants have the potential to negatively interact with the stratum corneum causing protein damage leading to edema and erythema (swelling and redness), lipid damage or solubilization leading to skin dryness, and NMF removal also leading to skin dryness. These negative interactions with the skin are very dependent on the type of surfactant used, use level of surfactants, combination of surfactants, formula pH, and other ingredients in the formula. For sensitive skin these considerations are crucial. Sensitive skin also often requires replenishment or deposition of moisture attracting ingredients to maintain homeostasis or balance.

Our body wash addresses sensitive skin twofold by cleansing with gentle surfactants and replenishing with hygroscopic and skin soothing ingredients. The cleansing system features mild biobased surfactants created from the building blocks of coconut fatty acids, plant sugars, and amino acids to cleanse without disrupting the skin barrier. We also utilized green tea saponins which are unrefined and naturally occurring molecules with foaming properties that are found in various plants. These bio-based surfactants coupled with green tea saponins make for a gentle cleansing experience. Polymers and rheology modifiers can mitigate irritation of surfactants on the skin by forming complexes with the surfactant micelles. We utilized a polysaccharide-rich starch that gives the creamy aesthetics and plush sensation to the formula while providing a conditioned skin after-feel. Polysaccharides are long chains of sugar molecules bonded together offering hygroscopic or moisture magnet properties. Another aspect to address sensitive skin is through replenishment or deposition on the skin. To improve moisture retention in the skin we added enzymatically fermented aloe, glycerin, and quaternized panthenol. Quaternized means the panthenol, vitamin B5, has been modified to have a cationic or positive charge to enhance deposition and attachment to skin. The formula is also blended with a soothing phytocomplex of marshmallow root, calendula, chamomile, and colloidal oatmeal all known for their skin calming properties. This fragrance-free formula is pH appropriate with a pH of 5.0-6.0. The cohesion of these building blocks: mild surfactants, skin conditioning ingredients, and appropriate pH make for a skin soothing wash that easily comforts sensitized skin.
