Keratosis Pilaris (KP) is a common skin disorder distinguished by keratinous plugs in the hair follicles visible as hardened bumps often associated with erythema. KP is caused by abnormal keratinization around hair follicles where keratin protein fills in the follicles rather than exfoliating over time.¹ This distention and filling of the follicle by keratin leads to rough, bumpy skin with varying degrees of skin redness. Sites often affected by KP include upper arms, thighs, and butt. While KP is hereditary and has roots in genetics, topical cosmetic treatments can be used to help manage the visual symptoms of KP, the “chicken skin” or “strawberry legs” as it is often called. Our KP Body Scrub & Mask is a full-bodied thick formula blended with 8% glycolic acid, 0.5% salicylic acid, 2% polyhydroxy acids and physical exfoliants to target uneven skin texture from multiple angles. While jojoba esters and finely milled pumice physically remove dead skin cells, the chemical exfoliants are crucial to this process as they loosen the glue binding the corneocytes together. The chemical exfoliants prepare the skin for the mechanical removal of the superficial layers by the physical exfoliants. Our scrub utilizes various acids to maximize the efficacy. Glycolic acid, the smallest of the alpha hydroxy acids, softens in a pH dependent manner through keratolytic action. Salicylic acid is an oil soluble and less pH dependent acid that can exfoliate within the pilosebaceous unit (hair follicle, hair shaft, and sebaceous gland) to further smooth and clear pores. Polyhydroxy acids are large molecular weight sugar acids that gently exfoliate top layers of the skin while hydrating due to their multiple water-loving hydroxy units.

Our unique combination of acids helps set the stage for the buffing agents to mechanically remove the keratin and dead skin cells. Ultra refined pumice, a volcanic mineraloid, as well as jojoba esters slough away the softened and loosened superficial layers of skin as well as keratinous plugs thanks to the aid of the chemical exfoliants. This pairing of physical and chemical exfoliants helps reveal fresh, even skin improving overall skin texture, tone, and radiance. This is not only a scrub that grips, polishes, and smooths skin but a mask that acts as an effective in-shower treatment. Our KP Body Scrub & Mask formulated at an acidic pH of 4.25-4.75 reduces the appearance of KP, pesky bumps and dry rough patches and improves the radiance of dull skin. Apply liberally to wet skin on areas of the body of concern and gently massage with fingertips. Wait a few minutes and rinse thoroughly. For best results, use 1-2 times a week.
